how to populate a List from a db field in another table?

Im having a problem while doing a query.
I have 2 table, one called employees and another called department
in employees, the field employee_number is the primary key and a foreign key of the employees table
In the dept table, the field employee_number is a foreign key from the employees table
When i try to do a select for employees with with the following query
SELECT distinct(e.employee_number) as e_number,e.firstname, e.lastname
FROM employee e
left join department d
on e.employee_number = d.employee_number

Im getting the error:
ERROR : Column ‘d.department_name’ in ‘from clause’ is invalid because it is not contained in either an aggregate function or the GROUP BY clause.

Im going to paste the query here
SELECT distinct(e.employee_number) as e_number,e.firstname, e.lastname
FROM employee e
left join department d
on e.employee_number = d.employee_number

It’s simple, check, if the department_name is from the list of GROUP BY-clause,
GROUP BY d.department_
